May is Asian History Month!

May is Asian Heritage Month, a time to recognise the long and rich history of Asian Canadians and their contributions to Canada and it’s also an occasion to reflect and celebrate the culture, art and history of Canadians of Asian heritage.

The celebration of Asian heritage in May first took place in Toronto in 1993 and spread from there to other Canadian Cities. In December 2001, the Senate adopted a motion proposed by Senator Vivienne Poy to officially designate May as Asian Heritage Month in Canada. In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to designate May as Asian Heritage Month.

Asian Heritage Month provides opportunities to learn about the history and contributions of Asian Canadians, the diversity within their communities, and their vibrant cultures that enrich Canada.
