OTTAWA – The Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa (CASO) has recently encountered situations where parents have become seriously ill and temporary care for their children was not available.
During these unique times, Kelly Raymond, CASO Executive Director urges parents to have a plan in place. “None of us want to consider the worst-case scenario but being prepared in the event of an unexpected situation is important. We strongly recommend that all parents identify someone to care for their children in case of emergencies and have their contact details accessible.”
Ensuring children are cared for by people they know will help minimize anxiety during a difficult situation. “The pandemic has caused huge uncertainty and anxiety for everyone, but particularly for children and youth,” said Joanne Lowe, Executive Director of the Youth Services Bureau and VP Mental Health and Addictions of CHEO. “Anytime that we can provide them with supports, such as knowing what to expect in unexpected circumstances, we’re giving them the tools to help cope with difficult situations.”
“In this latest resurgence, Ottawa has had more COVID-19 transmission than ever before, and new COVID variants are now responsible for the majority of infections. COVID-19 affects all age groups – some people with COVID-19 may be asymptomatic or have mild illness, others can have severe illness needing emergency medical intervention even among previously healthy individuals. When this happens to parents or caregivers, this presents a challenge to being able to provide care for others. It’s important to have a plan in the event you test positive for COVID-19 and require urgent care.” Dr. Brent Moloughney, Deputy Medical Officer of Health, Ottawa Public Health.
Parenting at any time is challenging, parenting during a pandemic is even more stressful. Service organizations across Ottawa recognize that many families are finding themselves dealing with difficult family situations, often very stressful. Being prepared is something everyone can do to minimize concern.
